What's the difference between this and Cortex Plus Hacker's Guide?

The Cortex Plus Hacker’s Guide is a collection of essays about hacking the version of Cortex Plus featured in Smallville and Leverage (known as “Dramatic Roleplaying” and “Action Roleplaying” in the Guide). It also included stripped down system reference docs for those versions of Cortex as well as Fantasy Heroic Roleplaying, a dungeon crawling hack of Marvel Heroic Roleplaying’s version of Cortex, plus a handful of setting hooks for those games.

Cortex Prime is different. It’s a toolkit game that brings together all of the elements of those versions of Cortex and many of the elements of the Classic Cortex from Serenity, Supernatural, Battlestar Galactica and Demon Hunters RPGs and presents them as a unified generic multi-genre system. The Game Handbook makes it easy to use various modular elements together to run games right away in an assortment of genres.

Because Prime draws from, updates, and refines everything that came before it, it replaces the SRDs in the back of the Hacker’s Guide. However, all of the amazing hacks and settings in the Hacker’s Guide remain usable with Prime because of the backwards compatibility features of Prime’s toolkit system.

I already own all the Cortex games (Leverage, Marvel, Supernatural, etc). Why do I want this one?

If you’re an expert hacker of Cortex already, you’re probably already used to taking elements from one game and dropping them into another. I strongly feel however that my approach for Cortex Prime not only makes all of that much easier, but it fixes some of the complaints about those games I’ve had in the past, from presentation of rules to some fiddly or clunky mechanics that irritated a few GMs and players. With Prime, and several rounds of playtesting and development, I think even experienced Cortex GMs will find the new book extremely valuable.

Is Cortex Prime backwards compatible with older Cortex-based RPGs?

Yes, that’s the plan. In some cases, terms are renamed or rules are tweaked, but the intent is to allow backwards compatibility while also presenting a lot of new options and variations to make the game extend beyond the previous RPGs.

Will there be a quickstart? Can we see the rules while the campaign is active?

There seems to be a lot of interest in a quickstart, so I’m working on putting something like that together. A draft of the system reference was released as part of Update #6.

Is it really going to cost $50 to send me my books in Europe/Asia/Pacific?

I felt it was better to be up front about the potential costs and be conservative about them. I’m shipping books out of Minnesota in the USA. That said, I also believe that once this campaign funds and I have the time to source the right shipping partners, the costs will be much less than that (though still potentially in the $15-$25 range depending on where in the world you are).

How will you ship the printed books? What if they're damaged en route?

We’re planning to ship all physical rewards in crush-resistant packaging designed for the size and weight of the books. We’ve seen these perform admirably in other campaigns with minimal shipping damage, and they do a great job of keeping corners from being dinged. In the event that any books do arrive damaged, we will of course replace them. More information on our shipping process will be posted closer to the fulfillment date (early in 2018).

How many Prime Spotlight volumes will come in print with the Prime Spotlight Hardcover level? Is it just the first two?

It’s actually all of them - or at least, all of them that we unlock during the campaign. This means that if we unlock four Prime Spotlights (which is the $65,000 goal), everyone who pledges for the $80 level gets all four of them in print.

BackerKit FAQ

What is BackerKit?

BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!

The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.

How does BackerKit work?

After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.

I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?

The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.

Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.

To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.

How do I update my shipping address?

BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.

When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?

That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.

I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?

As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
